Oral appliances have been registered by the FDA and may be used to treat sleep apnea when administered by a qualified dentist trained in Dental Sleep Therapy.
If a single treatment is not successful by itself, we are able to combine different therapies to obtain the desired result. Patients with severe sleep apnea often require higher air pressures from their CPAP units. Higher air pressures can be uncomfortable making CPAP usage difficult if not impossible for many patients.
The new FDA approved device, the TAP-PAP, allows a CPAP to be attached directly to an oral appliance. The TAP-PAP has no headstraps to keep the mask on your face. It uses nasal pillows and is extremely stable so that the nasal pillows are not easily dislodged. Since the oral appliance is already assisting in maintaining your airway, the air pressures for the CPAP unit are usually substantially lower. With lower CPAP air pressures, no headgear and a stable device, patient comfort is improved and patient usage increases.
Currently Dr. Denbar is the most experienced dentist trained to utilize combination therapy in the Austin area. In the very near future, Dr. Denbar will be teaching doctors from around the nation how to treat severe apnea with TAP-PAP combination treatment. If this therapy is needed, our office has state-of-the-art CPAP units for patients to use with their appliance. We are able to download information from the CPAP units and forward it to your physician so they are also updated on your medical condition. Our office and your physician's office can now work together to obtain the best result for you.
